A. In general, there are five major bar categories: Protein bars, Granola bars, Cereal bars, Fruit & Nut bars, and Fruit Bars (or energy bars). Most of the bars from the previous categories have added ingredients to make them shelf stable, have additional nutrition values (such as protein powder), or added ingredients for taste (such as sugar or flavoring). In comparison, Ekoa Bars have the fewest ingredients, are allergen-friendly, under 150 calories, and fit most diets!
Most products in the market are made from purees or concentrates. Our bars are made with whole dehydrated fruits and are nutrient dense. For example, our Pure Banana bar is simply made only with bananas, nothing else!
A. Ekoa Bars are rich in vitamins & fibers and should be enjoyed with a balanced diet. Our bars also assist in your daily fruit intake which The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) guidelines recommend the average adult consume two servings of fruit per day. We encourage you to try them as a pre & post workout snack, while traveling, between meals, and to help you with your sugar cravings.
A. Yes. Our bars are filled with good carbs that give you natural energy for your everyday tasks. Because dried fruits are calorie dense they are digested more slowly, meaning they provide long term energy without the usual sugar crash you get from snacks that have empty calories.
A. All of our bars are made from dried fruits, which means the fruits went through a process of dehydration before becoming an ingredient. Some brands work with purees or juice concentrate, which can or cannot have added preservatives, sugar, coloring, and flavoring to enhance the taste and shelf stability. When naturally dried, fruits do not need any added preservatives because the natural sugar from the fruit keeps them from going bad! Also, by using whole real fruits we are able to keep the nutritious value and fibers that are important for a healthy and balanced diet.
A. We believe fruits are perfect the way they are. By eating products that have added flavoring we are misleading our palate to thinking things should taste a certain way. Food, in its natural state, has complex flavors depending on weather conditions, soil, and farming practices. We can only get the full experience of the taste food has by consuming it the closest as possible to their original state. Fruits are naturally sweet and have different taste notes which makes them unique and delicious! We do not find it necessary to have any ‘add-ons’.
A. According to Britannica, “Dehydration, in food processing, means by which many types of food can be preserved for indefinite periods by extracting the moisture, thereby inhibiting the growth of microorganisms. Dehydration is one of the oldest methods of food preservation and was used by prehistoric peoples in sun-drying seeds. The North American Indians preserved meat by sun-drying slices, the Chinese dried eggs, and the Japanese dried fish and rice.” (Click HERE for full article.)
A. Ekoa Bars are free from all allergens, with the exception of Coconut. Coconut is considered a tree nut by the FDA. According to the Food Allergen Labeling and Consumer Protection Act of 2004 (FALCPA), the top 8 food allergens are: milk, eggs, fish, crustacean shellfish, tree nuts, peanuts, wheat, and soybeans.
A. Dried bananas are brown because the sugar that is in the fruit caramelizes during the dehydration process giving it a dark brown color. Usually banana chips that have a light color may have been processed with Sulphur Dioxide or some other type of additive to stop them from browning.
